Morning Manna | Deuteronomy 32:9 | The LORD's Portion

Deuteronomy 32:9 For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

What an amazing statement, "The LORD's portion is his people." We know that the earth and fullness thereof is his, (Psalms24:1) and that "He is before all things and by him all things consist,"(Col 1:17) but his people are his in a way peculiar to the rest of creation. All of creation is under his rule but his people are his not only by rights of creatorship but by rights of purchase, "O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased."(Exo 15:16) One of the greatest verses that illustrate this truth is Isaiah 43:1 "But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine."  God's people are his peculiar people, not only different in this world but different in our standing with God. We have our creator as our purchaser and redeemer.

Colossians teaches us this same lesson, in Chapter 1:16-22. He says in Col 1:16 "By him all things were created." In verse 17 he tells us that he still is the sustainer of this world he created, "by him all things consist." but verse 18 shows us he has a different relationship with his people than with the rest of creation, "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead." I want us to leave this morning with a renewed awe of our relationship with our Lord. Yes, he formed you, yes he created you but if you have been saved by grace then he has redeemed you! What a joy to know that the same one that formed me in my mother's womb, came down to this earth and purchased me with his own blood! "Col 1:21b-22 "Yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:"

As the redeemed of the Lord, we gladly own Him as our portion and inheritance, we claim him and joy in him and say he is our fulness! But Dear Christian,  not only is he your portion but you are his portion! We are his fulness! Listen to what Ephesians 1:22-23 say about the Church "And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all."

This is a fact so sweet, to know that he loves us to this degree, that we are his portion and his fulness. He was not interested in lands, animals, or businesses but in a people. Nothing makes us love someone like them loving us, "We love him because he first loved us." Nothing should make us glory in him being our portion and inheritance than this fact "The LORD's portion is his people." Israel got freedom from bondage, promised lands, protection, provision, pardon, and more than we could list here, but what did the Lord get? He got them. As the church we got pardon, promise, protection, provision, in short, we got Christ. What did he get? He got us the Church, "The fulness of him that filleth all in all."

As we go through our day let's be reminded of the great love wherewith he loved us. Let's be reminded of the price he paid to set us aside from all the rest of his creation, to be his peculiar people. Be reminded that he did all this to gain you. This should be totally sufficient to stir our hearts to reciprocate that same notion and respond, "The Lord is my portion!" He got me, but O, I got him! He is mine and I am His! Wonder of wonders that Jesus died to set us free and receive us unto himself!
