A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.” (Psalms 133:1-3)

"Behold," we have found a treasure, something worth admiring. This was the word that John the Baptist used when he saw the Lamb of God, The Word used at the Announcement of our Savior's birth, "Behold, a virgin shall be with Child." Our Lord often used this word to captivate our attention, or when he wanted to draw special attention to something, "Behold the fowls of the air," "Behold, a greater than Jonas is here."God has placed a behold here to draw special attention to the treasure of unity.

All good things are not always pleasant. It is good to suffer for His name's sake but not always pleasant. It is good to love those who hate you, but not always pleasant. But unity among brethren is all good and all pleasant. Here is something that we have every reason in the world to strive for. It is no wonder in Ephesians 4:3 we are commanded to “Endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Unity is such a precious jewel that if at first, you fail to obtain it, you must “Endeavour” to do so; that is diligent labor is exercised to obtain it. Not only good and pleasant to us but to everyone we have communion with.

Notice who this treasure is reserved for, “For brethren to dwell together in unity!” It is impossible to have unity among those who are not brethren. We know that if we walk in the light as He is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another. If a man is a brother, then we ought to strive, and endeavor for this unity. If we are agreed, then we can walk together, but “How can two walk together except they be agreed?" If we have been made a son of God, then we are brothers under one Father. We are members of one body under one head. Those things that make us different are not reasons for disunity but rather for our unity. We are one body with many members united under one head, and just as my hand and my feet work together and strive in unison to prosper my whole body, so should the body of Christ endeavor to dwell together in unity.

Unity is said to be like the precious ointment that Aaron was anointed with. This ointment signified Aaron’s sanctification unto the holiness required to minister in the tabernacle. Without it, he would not have been fit for the service of God and his people. So it is today, without unity in the body of Christ, we cannot properly serve the people God has called us to, nor the God we serve. Notice also that this is an anointing that comes down from the head, to the beard, and even to the lowest point, the hem of the garment. Unity is an anointing that comes down from our head, Jesus Christ. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are a Trinity, which is the compound word for Tri-unity. They never have nor ever will oppose one another's will; that is why they are said to be one, in will, purpose, and practice. They are one in being but in three persons, eternal unity. The closer we draw to God, the more united we will become with those who are united under the perfect unity of our God. “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another.”

Mount Hermon
Mt. Hermon from Tiberias

For our last illustration, God takes us to Mount Hermon, the highest point in Israel. The dew would gather on this range of mountains, some would freeze in the mornings, and as the day became warmer, the waters would melt and the dew of the morning would become the streams that feed the valleys below, including the waters that feed the great city Jerusalem, which is what is meant by “Zion” in our verse. That is a picture of the unity of God that comes from our high priest Jesus Christ and flows down to us. Not only unity but life itself, all blessings come down from Him, “Blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus, in heavenly places.” Not only unity but “Blessing, even life forevermore.”
