Matthew 2:15 - “And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.”

Matthew 2:17 - “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,”

Matthew 2:23 - “And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.”

There was no scribe or student before the coming of Christ who could have possibly connected all the dots of the prophecy concerning their Messiah. The will of God for the life of His Beloved was mapped out from before the foundations of the world, and little glimpses of it were revealed to holy men who were inspired to write it down as a sign to the nation that would receive Jesus in the fullness of time.

It is only in the slow grind of daily life and the twists and turns of living that the dots are connected before it can make sense. How a man could be a Nazarene and from Egypt, or how he could be a lion and a lamb, how he could be a king and a servant—these are total enigmas until the 33 years, death, and resurrection come into view, and suddenly the enigmas of God’s will become clear. I suspect still that those future promises that have baffled the church for millennia will one day very soon unfold before our very eyes, and the dots will connect and we will no longer wonder how God’s will could be so.

Have you ever wondered how the promises of God could possibly be true in your life? Future promises of sanctification and guidance seem to be an enigma and totally disconnected from our experience. Wait a little longer, perplexed Christian. Soon life will unfold before your eyes, and day by day you’ll see His promises—that seemed so impossible to such a wretch as you—coming to pass.

Some promises are revealed in a moment, others are realized over long seasons, others take a lifetime, and some will only be realized in eternity. Fear not, His word will accomplish what He has sent it to do, and time has no effect on the promises of God.

Perhaps God has given you little glimpses of His will for your life, a word here and there, and there you sit trying to connect dots that you’ll never connect. Wait now on His providence and the days of life that will unfold His will and draw the winding road of life that will bring you to His expected end. Forsake your anxious forecasting and trust the road He sets before you, and when the record of your life is reckoned up, it will be said of the twists and turns in the road: “that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord.“
